ACADEMIC PROGRAM
Spanish Language and Culture in Cordoba, Argentina
The goal of this program is to provide an effective and high-quality linguistic and cultural experience for students. It seeks to maximize cultural immersion by placing students with select local families and by facilitating the “Speaking-Partners” program, a student-to-student conversation exchange. UT and UNC students are matched based on mutual interests. Program staff also coordinate additional, optional cultural and social activities. Students are encouraged to speak only Spanish while at home and at the university.
Taught at the Universidad Nacional de Córdoba (UNC), the program offers two summer sessions and an array of coursework in Spanish language, literature, and civilization (some of which cross-list with Latin American Studies) during each. These courses are open to students of all majors who have the proper prerequisites and a keen interest in developing their Spanish. Students may elect to attend either or both session(s). Each session at least one course will be taught, one course will be taught by a UT faculty member from the Spanish and Portuguese Department. The remainder will be taught by experienced UNC professors. Students enroll in six hours per session.
An additional, major-related course will be taught in the field of Engineering during Session I (restricted to Engineering majors).
Another beneficial feature of this program is the UNC staff office dedicated to assisting UT students daily and after office hours as needed. The program director, Professor Roxana Patiño, has taught at UT Austin and is also professor of literature at UNC. She has directed the program since its inception in 2003.
